If you remember Kibaki well then you must vividly remember that he was sworn in on a wheelchair. Mwai Kibaki an aspirant then he encountered an accident when he was coming from campaigns from the eastern region.
The accident threatened Kibaki’s life and his doctor recommended to be flown to the United Kingdom for treatment.
Before the accident, former President Mwai Kibaki and ODM leader Raila Odinga were very close associates who put up a formidable campaign in 2002.
On his flight to the United Kingdom for treatment, Mwai Kibaki on a stretcher then was allocated the back seats of the plane. Raila Odinga argued that they should not be there. he even went ahead and paid for the three to sit in the first class cabin for a better comfort.
“I have a lot of respect for Raila. He came with about eight young men who carried the stretcher to the front seats on their knees,” Gikonyo told journalists.
Since Mwai Kibaki was in the hospital, Raila Odinga went out championing for his election which they won with 62% of the votes cast.
Former Kitui senator David Musila was among those were instrumental at that time. His work was to talk to Kibaki and assuring him that he will be president.
