Kipchumba Murkomen the Elgeyo Marakwet senator on Saturday challenged Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji over the hiring of Queen’s Counsel Khawar Qureshi.
Murkomen termed the hiring a foreign lawyer means he is demeaning Kenya lawyers. He continued daring DPP Haji to personally prosecute the case against Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu.
“The idea of getting a foreign Advocate to prosecute domestic cases just before our Independence Day is totally misguided,” said Murkomen.
Murkomen continued saying, “If the DPP mistrusts all the Kenyan Lawyers he should just have led by example and prosecute the case himself.”
Murkomen did not at all like outsourcing lawyers even after 50 years of independence. He even dared Haji if he was competent enough to appear in court himself.
“If not where does he get the ability to determine cases that should or should not proceed for prosecution?” said Murkomen.
With Mwilu’s defense team lead by Siaya Senator James Orengo, they opposing the DPPs move in contracting a foreigner who had no license to work in the country. The defense team further explained that DPP had no power in appointing him.
The prosecution team opposed Orengo’s claims saying that such comments were equivalent to questioning the powers of the Attorney General and the DPP.
DPP haji requested that senators Orengo and Okong’o Omogeni be disqualified from taking part in Mwilu’s case.
