Energy majors around the globe unveiled their second-quarter earnings reports this week, with New Zealand's Contact Energy Limited (COENF) shining on the bright side, while the UK's Serica Energy plc (SQZZF) reported losses.
The contrasting results highlight both the strengths and vulnerabilities of the global energy sector in the current climate, with the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine casting a long shadow.

Analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence attribute Contact Energy's 13% increase in revenue for its fiscal Q4 2026, which climbed to $1.45 billion, to the exceptionally warm first half of this year in New Zealand. Higher temperatures and humidity have increased energy consumption, driving gains in electricity and gas sales.

Notably, the company's robust growth in electricity retailing is expected to continue in the years ahead, but analysts warn of regulatory uncertainty, citing potential impacts from government policy and environmental laws that could dampen Contact Energy's future prospects.

Meanwhile, in the UK, Serica Energy reported a 7% decline in revenue to $235 million for its Q2 2026, mainly due to lower oil prices and production at the Clyde field, according to a transcript of their earnings call. Analysts say Serica's production decline was anticipated, but a delay in bringing on new production at the Piper Alpha field has weighed on results this quarter.
As a result, Contact Energy's shares rose 4.2% in early trading, whereas Serica Energy's fell 5.5%, reflecting the differing investor expectations for each company's financial performance.

The mixed earnings results underscore the ongoing challenges and uncertainties faced by the global energy sector, from regulatory headwinds to changing market conditions. As investors assess their investment portfolios and consider future risks, market analysts at Refinitiv will closely follow the performance of energy companies in the weeks and quarters to come, providing updated insights and analysis.
